Programme

Founded in the 2nd century BC and rebuilt by Rome after the earthquake of 60 AD, Hierapolis grew wealthy as a thermal cure centre and as a producer of wool and dyed textiles. Its ruins spread across the plateau directly above the travertines.

The tour covers the theatre, one of the best-preserved in Anatolia, the monumental Frontinus Street and Domitian Gate, the largest necropolis in Asia Minor, and the octagonal Martyrium built on the site associated with the martyrdom of the apostle Philip. The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum, housed in the Roman baths, completes the visit.
